  {"id":1958,"date":"2016-04-14T13:02:09","date_gmt":"2016-04-14T20:02:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wou.edu\/math\/?page_id=1958"},"modified":"2022-09-01T07:00:39","modified_gmt":"2022-09-01T14:00:39","slug":"aleks","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/wou.edu\/math\/aleks\/","title":{"rendered":"ALEKS Math Assessment"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About ALEKS<\/h2>\n<h3>What is ALEKS?<\/h3>\n<p>ALEKS is a powerful artificial-intelligence based assessment tool that zeros in on the strengths and weaknesses of a student\u2019s mathematical knowledge, reports its findings to the student, and then provides the student with a learning environment for improving this knowledge to an appropriate level for course placement.<\/p>\n<p>The ALEKS Math Assessment ensures students&#8217; readiness for mathematics courses at ÀÖ²¥ÊÓÆµ. Since these courses are demanding, it is important for students to begin in the course most likely to lead to success. Students will not be permitted to take a course unless they have demonstrated readiness. After completing the initial assessment, students who wish to improve their skills may use the included learning modules.<\/p>\n<p>Students may not take certain courses in mathematics without demonstrating readiness.<\/p>\n<h3>Who must take ALEKS?<\/h3>\n<p>Some entering first-year students and some new transfer students will be recommended to take the ALEKS assessment. Please check in with your advisor for assistance.<\/p>\n<p>Check which mathematics course(s) your major requires. If you major requires mathematics, the course(s) likely have a math or ALEKS placement level prerequisite.<\/p>\n<p>If you are only required to take a General Education Foundations &#8211; Mathematics course that does not have a math or ALEKS placement level prerequisite, you are not required to take the ALKES assessment.<\/p>\n<p>Feel free to check in with the <a href=\"http:\/\/wou.edu\/gened\">General Education program<\/a> for assistance.<\/p>\n<p>You DON&#8217;T need to take the ALEKS assessment if you:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong>Already have college math credit<\/strong><br \/>\nIf you have college mathematics credit with a grade of C- or higher (MTH 060, 070, 095, 111, 112, or 200-level), you do not need to take the ALEKS assessment. Do check with your academic advisor about math prerequisites.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;padding-left: 30px\"><strong>Already have AP math credit<br \/>\n<\/strong>If you have AP mathematics credit, you do not need to take\u00a0the ALEKS assessment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;padding-left: 30px\">If you are unsure about your college or AP credit, please see your academic advisor.<\/p>\n<p>If you are a current WOU student and you have not yet taken a mathematics placement assessment, please check in with your advisor for assistance.<\/p>\n<h3>When do students take ALEKS?<\/h3>\n<p>Students need to demonstrate readiness for their scheduled courses via ALEKS assessment prior to registering for a WOU mathematics course.<\/p>\n<p>Students beginning classes Fall term may begin the assessment May 1.<\/p>\n<p>It is highly recommended that first-year and transfer students take the ALEKS assessment prior to attending any campus advising and \/ or registration events.<\/p>\n<p>Students beginning classes in Winter, Spring and Summer terms may begin the assessment at different times, please use the contact information at the end of this page.<\/p>\n<h3>Your score expires after one year<\/h3>\n<p>See <a href=\"https:\/\/wou.edu\/math\/aleks\/how-long-does-my-score-last\/\">How Long Do I Have?<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>How long will the assessment take?<\/h3>\n<p>The assessment will ask 30 questions. You should plan to complete the assessment in one 2 &#8211; 3 hour sitting.
