  {"id":11484,"date":"2019-12-03T16:35:58","date_gmt":"2019-12-04T00:35:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernhowl\/?p=11484"},"modified":"2019-12-03T16:35:58","modified_gmt":"2019-12-04T00:35:58","slug":"after-an-unparalleled-2018-haul-westerns-toy-drive-hopes-to-maintain-that-momentum-for-the-2019-season","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernhowl\/after-an-unparalleled-2018-haul-westerns-toy-drive-hopes-to-maintain-that-momentum-for-the-2019-season\/","title":{"rendered":"After an unparalleled 2018 haul, Western\u2019s Toy Drive hopes to maintain that momentum for the 2019 season"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span><strong>Sage Kiernan-Sherrow<\/strong>\u00a0 |\u00a0 News Editor<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Following a record-breaking year in donations, the annual WOU Toy Drive is once again setting up collection boxes for the Christmas season.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The campus drive has been operating for the past seven years, and developed \u201corganically\u201d after a foster student named Matthew Burley asked why there wasn\u2019t a holiday program for foster-care and underprivileged students, said Jackson Stalley, a library technician at Western and coordinator for the toy drive.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>After finding campus partners, the drive has \u201cbecome a part of WOU\u2019s holiday culture,\u201d said Stalley, \u201cit became so popular and successful because of the generosity of our campus \u2026 people rely on us.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Western\u2019s Toy Drive operates separately from the Student Veterans of America\u2019s Toys for Tots, and is the primary donor of holiday gifts to local organizations such as the Sable House, DHS and the Liberty House in Salem \u2014 organizations that provide services to those in the foster care system and to families experiencing domestic violence, as well.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The first year that they delivered the toys, one of the organizations had about eight presents prior, Stalley recalled.
