  {"id":15335,"date":"2020-02-16T17:19:52","date_gmt":"2020-02-17T01:19:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernhowl\/?p=15335"},"modified":"2020-02-16T17:19:52","modified_gmt":"2020-02-17T01:19:52","slug":"oregons-largest-private-university-concordia-university-is-closing-its-doors-after-this-term","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernhowl\/oregons-largest-private-university-concordia-university-is-closing-its-doors-after-this-term\/","title":{"rendered":"Oregon\u2019s largest private university, Concordia University, is closing its doors after this term"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"402\" height=\"288\" class=\"wp-image-15321 aligncenter\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernhowl\/files\/2020\/02\/university-color-1024x732.jpg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernhowl\/files\/2020\/02\/university-color-1024x732.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernhowl\/files\/2020\/02\/university-color-300x214.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernhowl\/files\/2020\/02\/university-color-768x549.jpg 768w, https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernhowl\/files\/2020\/02\/university-color-1536x1098.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernhowl\/files\/2020\/02\/university-color-1080x772.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernhowl\/files\/2020\/02\/university-color.jpg 1654w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 402px) 100vw, 402px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Sage Kiernan-Sherrow\u00a0<\/strong> | News Editor<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Concordia University, located in Portland, is the largest private university in Oregon, and it\u2019s closing permanently at the end of this semester in April \u2014 its 115-year run coming to an end.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>This makes Concordia the fourth local private university in Oregon to close since 2018, following <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/portland\/news\/2018\/05\/17\/marylhurst-university-to-close-after-125-years.html\"><span>Marylhurst University closed<\/span><\/a><span>, The Art Institute of Portland and Oregon College of Art and Craft.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>A sophomore at Concordia, Bailey Wieland, called the news a \u201cshock,\u201d mentioning that she felt blindsided, because she had just received an email to register for the upcoming term.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Concordia senior, Christian Thyron, concurred, adding that he had \u201cheard enrollment was the highest it had been in awhile, and that Concordia was expanding and growing.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Wieland thinks that Concordia\u2019s closing is due to low-enrollment \u2014 a notion that is backed by statements from the administration \u2014 although former reports show a growing online enrollment pattern over the last few years and their seven-year self-evaluation report portrays them as one of the highest growing universities ranked by the Chronicle of Higher Education.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Regardless, Concordia University has struggled financially in the past few years, following a rollercoaster pattern of increases and decreases. Portland Business Journal published an article on Feb. 10 discussing Concordia\u2019s controversial partnership with HotChalk, a company which creates online degree programs, which resulted in a $1 million settlement that\u2019s cause for speculation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Condordia has contributed more than 251,000 service hours benefitting an estimated 10,000 people, including 5,000 youth, according to their seven-year self-evaluation report.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI feel really bad for the university. It\u2019s been a home to people in the community and for those attending and working there,\u201d Thyron said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Concordia\u2019s financial deficits have resulted in thousands of students struggling to figure out the next steps in their college careers. As Wieland said, \u201cwe are asking ourselves \u2018where are we going to go now? Is all of our going to go to the other school when we transfer?\u2019\u201d Wieland plans to further her education through the University of Portland, but her peers still have many decisions to make.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Western faces similar issues in terms of low-enrollment.
