  {"id":17954,"date":"2021-06-01T08:39:02","date_gmt":"2021-06-01T16:39:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernhowl\/?p=17954"},"modified":"2021-06-01T08:39:03","modified_gmt":"2021-06-01T16:39:03","slug":"wou-softball-enters-gnac-championship-as-alternates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernhowl\/wou-softball-enters-gnac-championship-as-alternates\/","title":{"rendered":"WOU softball enters GNAC championship as alternates"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>Wolves softball team place third overall in GNAC championship<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Sydney Carpenter<\/strong> | News Editor <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>A rise in COVID-19 cases in the state of Washington caused the Great Northwest Athletic Conference\u2019s original fourth seed \u2014 Central Washington \u2014 to drop out of the softball championship being hosted at Western.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p><span>As a result of the Conference\u2019s bylaws, the Western Oregon Wolves softball team \u2014 fifth seed \u2014 was promoted to the fourth seed position and entered into the championship game for the eighth consecutive year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Similar to years prior, GNAC formatted the championship game as a double elimination tournament. The first round winners went head to head in a second round, and the losing teams from the first round played in a second round match to determine the competitors for the third and final championship match.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernhowl\/files\/2021\/06\/softball3.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-17935\" width=\"3895\" height=\"2245\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span>In the first round of the tournament on May 6, Western lost to first seed Northwest Nazarene Nighthawks 2-1. The following day, Western competed against third seed Saint Martin Saints; the team gave the Wolves several walking opportunities to fill the bases, leading to a 7-6 victory for the Wolves. Western advanced to face off again against the Nighthawks, only to lose 9-0 in five innings, bringing an end to the softball season. With this, the Wolves placed third in the GNAC conference.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>After the game, the Wolves commemorated the senior members of their team that will be graduating in June.
