The Golden Globes is an award ceremony held annually to recognize the achievements of actors, directors, composers and even the movies themselves. \u201cOppenheimer\u201d, \u201cBarbie\u201d and \u201cKillers of the Flower Moon\u201d all walked away with awards this year.<\/span><\/p>\n

The awards rewarded are as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n

Best Drama \u2014<\/b> \u201cOppenheimer\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Best Actress in a Drama \u2014<\/b>\u00a0 Lily Gladstone in \u201cKillers of the Flower Moon\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Best Actor in a Drama \u2014<\/b> Cillian Murphy in \u201cOppenheimer\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Best Director \u2014<\/b> Christopher Nolan in \u201cOppenheimer\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Cinematic and Box Office Achievement \u2014<\/b>\u00a0 \u201cBarbie\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Other winners include Studio Ghibli\u2019s \u201cThe Boy and the Heron,\u201d Billie Eilish\u2019s original song \u201cWhat Was I Made For?\u201d from \u201cBarbie\u201d and director Yorgos Lanthimos\u2019 comedy \u201cPoor Things,\u201d starring Emma Stone and Mark Ruffalo. However, it is not the Golden Globe winners that have been generating a buzz on social media, nor is it Lily Gladstone\u2019s acceptance speech, where she spoke in the Blackfeet language.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Nope, everyone is worked up about Jo Koy and his \u201cjokes\u201d about \u201cBarbie\u201d and Taylor Swift \u2014 whose \u201cEras Tour\u201d movie was also nominated.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Koy\u2019s monologue included the comparison of \u201cOppenheimer\u201d and \u201cBarbie.\u201d \u201cOppenheimer is based on a 721-page Pulitzer Prize-winning book about the Manhattan Project, and Barbie is on a plastic doll with big boobies,\u201d Koy said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Almost immediately following the slight, he went after Swift, joking that the difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL was that the Globes showed fewer shots of Taylor Swift.<\/span><\/p>\n

These \u201cjokes\u201d have taken precedence over the achievements of the directors and actors who worked tirelessly on these movies. Rather than celebrating the fact that \u201cOppenheimer,\u201d a movie showing the horrific beauties of war, and \u201cBarbie,\u201d a movie celebrating womanhood, won in their categories, everyone is now focused on how much of an absolute joke the Golden Globes award ceremony has become.<\/span><\/p>\n

These jokes have especially been met with criticism online, with many users saying that 2023 was the year for girlhood and that Koy watered it down to Swift being the star of the NFL and \u201cBarbie\u201d being simply about a plastic doll. \u201cBarbie\u201d and \u201cThe Eras Tour Movie\u201d both were huge box office successes, as well as Swift\u2019s Eras Tour garnering millions of dollars. Swift has indeed aided the NFL in their viewership \u2014 increasing 7% every week since she started to attend the games in support of her boyfriend, Travis Kelce. The NFL is now at its highest viewership since 2015.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lily Gladstone received some buzz online \u2014 not as much as she deserved \u2014 for being the first Indigenous actress to win a Golden Globe for Best Actress. When she received her award, she spoke in her Native Blackfeet language. Language experts at Simon Fraser University and the University of Montana said that her speech translated to: \u201cHello my friends and relatives. My name is Eagle Woman. I am Blackfoot. I love you all.\u201d Gladstone grew up on the Blackfoot reservation in Montana.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Whether one follows the Golden Globes or not, what should be focused on is the achievements of these movies, and how they have affected audiences around the world.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
