Studies have indicated that college students with mental health struggles are significantly more likely to drop out than those who do not struggle. According to CNN, about 75 percent of mental health problems begin to emerge in a person\u2019s 20s.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/monitor\/2022\/10\/mental-health-campus-care\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">American Psychological Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, 60 percent of college students meet the criteria for at least one mental illness. This entails 60 percent of college students having a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sprc.org\/settings\/colleges-and-universities\/consequences-of-student-mental-health-issues\/#:~:text=One%20study%20found%20that%20five,not%20been%20experiencing%20such%20disorders.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">5 percent chance of dropping out<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Dropping out of college may lead to lower-level jobs with a correlation to a decrease in pay. Along with this prevalent fact, many consider education to be important for everyone, and those with a mental illness should not have to face more educational barriers than others.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Madeline Hulme of the University of New Mexico described her experience having bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder while being enrolled in a full course load. \u201cI don\u2019t want to get out of bed, I don\u2019t feel like I belong in a University setting because I feel like everyone is judging me constantly,\u201d said Hulme.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This form of judgment assumedly raising dropout rates is also spoken about in the aforementioned CNN article, \u201cI felt like it was fake for me to be there. That I wasn\u2019t good enough to get a degree and it was really hard for me to keep going.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hulme then explained that she considers dropping out three to five times per semester due to \u201c&#8230;the workload, the ability to not understand the material and think(ing) I\u2019m not good enough to graduate.\u201d Furthermore, Hulme added, \u201cI would cry a lot about not being able to understand the college setting.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Madeline Hulme graduates in two weeks and is headed to graduate school for a degree in Cognitive Neuroscience.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Find help for mental illness struggles through Western\u2019s own Abby\u2019s House.
