The staff of \u201cThe Western Howl\u201d has all avenues covered \u2014 and then some.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Shows and movies:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cAttack on Titan\u201d \u2014 Sophie Taylor, designer<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the highest-rated animes of all time, Taylor\u2019s choice of \u201cAttack on Titan\u201d is a show that \u201cis breathtaking and was crafted to perfection. Twists and turns that no one sees coming will leave you jaw-dropped, looking at your own reflection on the black screen.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The show follows protagonist Eren Yeager as he joins the elite Survey Corps and faces off against Titans \u2014 gigantic, humanoid creatures that feed on humans \u2014 and is currently streaming on Apple TV+ and Crunchyroll.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cRiver Monsters\u201d \u2014 Sophia Pierce, designer<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAfter 9 seasons, the show has sadly been discontinued since Jeremy Wade, the show\u2019s star, has caught essentially all our waters have to offer,\u201d Pierce said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following Jeremy Wade as searches for exotic fishes, both big and small, the show goes across the globe and explores the cultures and stories of the people who have seen these creatures.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cWhen a Stranger Calls\u201d \u2014 Quincy Bentley, sports editor<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bentley\u2019s love for horror shows in his pick, calling it a horror movie without the gore. \u201cThough it was made in 1979, the suspense remains timeless. The utter intensity of the film kept me on the edge of my seat for the full 97 minutes,\u201d he said. \u201c(It\u2019s) definitely worth the watch.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The film follows high school student Jill Johnson who is terrorized by a killer during an evening of babysitting. She receives repeated calls asking her, \u201cHave you checked the children lately?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Books:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cJurassic Park\u201d by Michael Criton \u2014 Isabelle Jones, lifestyle editor<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jones is a self-professed lover of all things \u201cJurassic Park,\u201d and her pick had her captivated by the relationship between man and dinosaurs \u2014 and its destructive nature. \u201cFor those waiting for Jurassic World Rebirth, take some time and learn about the origins of the franchise in this vicious adventure,\u201d she said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first in a duology, \u201cJurassic Park\u201d explores the concept of cloning dinosaur DNA and its consequences. Much of the plot is similar to the movie, though of course creative liberties were taken during its filming.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cThe Invisible Life of Addie LaRue\u201d by V.E. Schwab \u2014 Hannah Field, editor-in-chief<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy favorite book of all time. Addie LaRue is cursed to live forever and be known by nobody \u2014 until somebody remembers her and, against all odds, they vow to rewrite their past and future as one. V.E. Schwab writes with magnetic prose in this standalone novel, capturing the human experience in such a captivating story,\u201d Field says.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cThe Book Thief\u201d by Markus Zusak \u2014 Addie Floyd, head designer<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Perhaps one of the greatest books of our time, Floyd\u2019s choice is one that she says broke her heart to pieces. \u201c(It\u2019s) definitely a life-changing book. I finished this book when I was in class my senior year of high school,\u201d she says. \u201cWorst idea ever. I should have known better. After all, it is narrated by death.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Music:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cPreacher\u2019s Daughter\u201d by Ethel Cain \u2014 Ruth Simonsen, digital media manager<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At Terry House, there\u2019s one rule: in Ruth\u2019s music we trust, and her choice of Ethel Cain\u2019s album is the best example of why this is. \u201cThis album strikes home for anyone with religious trauma, as it follows the daughter of a preacher through her life, brutal death and afterlife,\u201d she says. \u201cListen to this album during the quiet hours of the evening, preferably with a candle burning and noise-canceling headphones.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cthe sugar machine\u201d by slenderbodies \u2014 Kiera Roedel, copy editor<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aside from being our copy editor, Roedel is also phenomenal at writing deep-dive album reviews, so this is familiar territory for her.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA falsetto-laden dream-pop record about yearning for days gone by and wishing for love and tranquility. Soft guitars, synthesizers and unusual percussion lines make it a peaceful yet engaging listen,\u201d she says. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t hurt that almost every song has an earworm chorus.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cImaginary Appalachia\u201d by Colter Wall \u2014 Jaylin Emond-Hardin, entertainment editor<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My personal pick, Wall\u2019s debut album is reminiscent of the days of Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson and Loretta Lynn. With soulful lyrics that dredge up images of the American South, this album is sure to make one yearn for the days of open ranges, cowboys and whiskey so strong it would knock the fuzz off a peach.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Podcasts:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cThe Magnus Archives\u201d \u2014 Sadie Latimer, news editor<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A horror anthology podcast, \u201cThe Magnus Archives\u201d progresses as Jonathan Sims archives a collection of statements dealing with the paranormal. Each episode varies between 20 and 40 minutes and is sure to keep listeners riveted.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis podcast is long, but so worth it. Throughout the 200 episodes, it delves into the supernatural world and what it really means to be human,\u201d Latimer says.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cOld Gods of Appalachia\u201d \u2014 Jaylin Emond-Hardin, entertainment editor<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another horror anthology podcast, \u201cOld Gods of Appalachia\u201d narrates the sordid and violent events surrounding the town of Barlo, Kentucky and its paranormal origins.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With a backing soundtrack that throws listeners into the moment, this is a podcast that is truly terrifying.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cOlogies\u201d \u2014 Ruth Simonsen, digital media manager<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This podcast is filled with interviews from experts in basically every field \u2014 \u201cIf it has an \u2018-ology,\u2019 it has an episode,\u201d Simonsen says.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With more than 130 episodes, the podcast explores the truly wild and niche fields, including basket weaving, called canistrumology.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Contact the author at howlentertainment@wou.edu<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>February 5, 2025 Written by: Jaylin Emond-Hardin | Entertainment Editor Looking for a new show to binge or a new artist to fill the homework hours?
