ESPN lost a legend
\non Sunday, Jan. 4. Stuart
\nScott was 49 years
\nold and was diagnosed
\nwith cancer in 2007.
\nHe was the catalysis to the new century of
\nthe way sports was broadcasted, and one of
\nthe most memorable and inspiring faces on
\ntelevision.
\nScott was not only an actor starring in
\ntelevision shows and movies like \u201cDrumline,\u201d
\n\u201cHerbie: Fully Loaded\u201d and \u201cThe Longest
\nYard,\u201d but also a father to two daughters,
\nTaelor and Sydni, a Jimmy V Award winner
\nat the 2014 ESPY Awards and, most importantly,
\none of the staples to the change and
\nimprovement of the way sports was reported
\non television.
\nKnown for his enthusiasm, love and passion
\nfor sports, unique style and catchphrases
\nsuch as \u201cBOO-YAH,\u201d \u201cas cool as the other
\nside of the pillow,\u201d and \u201che must be the bus
\ndriver \u2018cause he was takin\u2019 him to school,\u201d
\nScott used his inspiring and entertaining
\npersonality to impact everyone around him
\non and off the air.
\nIn 1993, Scott entered ESPN during the
\ncreation of ESPN2 as a frequent on SportsSmash
\nand SportsNight before earning a seat
\nin SportsCenter and covering some of the
\nlargest events in sports.
\nScott covered the NBA and NFL for
\nESPN and in 2002, was named studio host
\nfor the NBA on ESPN.
\nBy 2008, he had earned lead host for NBA
\non ESPN and ABC where he anchored the
\nNBA finals and SportsCenter\u2019s prime-time.
\nCovering the NBA finals from 1997 until
\n2014, Scott became a familiar face and a
\nfamiliar voice, anchoring some memorable
\nsports history and using his fancy catchphrases
\nto capture exactly what sports is
\nabout: passion and enthusiasm.
\nScott was not only a memorable and historic
\nfigure on ESPN and to the public, but
\nalso an inspiration and a fighter.
\nIn December 2012, Scott\u2019s illness returned
\nand he began sharing more details with the
\npublic, including that he only missed ESPN
\nfor chemotherapy treatments every other
\nMonday and that he would train at a mixedmartial
\narts gym afterwards.
\nFor someone battling such a debilitating
\ndisease, he was determined to prove nothing
\ncould slow him down or decrease his experiences
\nin life.
\n\u201cWhen you die, it does not mean that you
\nlose to cancer,\u201d Scott said during his acceptance
\nspeech at the 2014 ESPYS. \u201cYou beat
\ncancer by how you live, why you live and in
\nthe manner in which you live.\u201d
\nThe impact upon athletes and colleagues
\nhas shown bright through their public remembrances
\nand statements on how much
\nof a pioneer Scott was for this organization
\nand for those around him.
\nArizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry
\nFitzgerald expressed his thoughts on Scott\u2019s
\npassing through Twitter with this statement:
\n\u201cStuart Scott was more than a great father;
\nhe was a most cherished friend, a signature
\nsports anchor and entertainer, more
\nthan a prophet for the power of mass communications.
\nHe became the voice of daily sports on a
\nnational level at a time when sports communication
\nwas proliferating into a phenom
\nenon that changed the way we digested the
\nheroics of athletic prowess.\u201d
\nLos Angeles Lakers and NBA legend
\nKobe Bryant was also greatly impacted by
\nScott\u2019s passing.
\nDuring a post-game interview he was
\nasked about his reaction:
\n\u201cThe sports world lost a legend. I certainly
\ngrew up wanting to be on SportsCenter just
\nto have him comment on a highlight or two
\nof mine. He\u2019s really changed the vernacular
\nof sports and added such a, kind of a hip-hop
\nculture to the sports game. He battled hard,
\nI can\u2019t say enough about what an inspiration
\nhe\u2019s been.\u201d
\nBesides the inspiration Scott instilled
\nin so many young athletes, professional
\nathletes he was interviewing, viewers, coworkers
\nand public figures, he truly was a
\npioneer, \u201cHall-of-Famer,\u201d to SportsCenter
\nand ESPN.
\nSince the beginning, his personality and
\nstyle slowly created a positive growth to the
\nway we view and broadcast sports.
\nHe will forever be remembered and continue
\nto inspire those around him to live life
\nto the absolute fullest, as cool as the other
