  {"id":5010,"date":"2017-02-01T08:00:41","date_gmt":"2017-02-01T16:00:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wou.edu\/westernjournal\/?p=5010"},"modified":"2017-01-31T18:47:30","modified_gmt":"2017-02-01T02:47:30","slug":"dethroned-king-gaming","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernhowl\/dethroned-king-gaming\/","title":{"rendered":"The dethroned king of gaming"},"content":{"rendered":"<pre>By: Ashton Newton\r\nEntertainment Editor<\/pre>\n<p>I had the kind of grandparents who referenced everything related to video games as \u201ca Nintendo\u201d, which was an easy thing for individuals unfamiliar with gaming to do with how prominent the name was.<\/p>\n<p>Despite large success since 1997, Nintendo was at its financial peak with 2006\u2019s Wii, selling 101.1 million units as of 2016, more than both the Playstation 3 and the Xbox 360.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, Nintendo has been pushed to the very back of the console market, with the WiiU selling only 13 million units. Not only was the WiiU the lowest selling Nintendo product, but it sold less <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernjournal\/files\/2017\/01\/Screen-Shot-2017-01-31-at-6.45.59-PM-221x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"221\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5044 alignleft\" \/>units than any of Sony\u2019s or Microsoft\u2019s consoles. The WiiU\u2019s hardware just couldn\u2019t compare with the Playstation 4 and Xbox One.<\/p>\n<p>While the original Wii\u2019s hardware couldn\u2019t keep up with the modern consoles, the main selling point was fun. Both \u201cWii Sports\u201d and \u201cMario Kart Wii\u201d quickly became fan favorites and helped contribute to the console&#8217;s success. The WiiU lacked memorable games and couldn\u2019t run popular games, so it was much less desirable and the sales of other modern consoles soared instead.<\/p>\n<p>2017 will see the release of Nintendo\u2019s new console, the Switch. Nintendo told The Wall Street Journal that they\u2019re producing three million units to start out and are anticipating selling 10 million by the end of 2017, almost catching up to the WiiU.<\/p>\n<p>With optimized hardware to play modern games, such as \u201cThe Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim\u201d, and a large list of new original games including \u201cThe Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild\u201d and \u201cSuper Mario Odyssey\u201d, Nintendo is attempting to appeal to gamers on all levels.<\/p>\n<p>The $300 price tag isn\u2019t stopping fans from taking to social media with excitement.
