Polk County Fire District played<br \/>\nagainst the Monmouth and Independence<br \/>\nPolice Departments. The event was held to<br \/>\nraise money for local emergency responders<br \/>\nto keep homes in the area safe, as well<br \/>\nas to provide a rush week event for Kappa<br \/>\nSigma. Admission was free and open to the<br \/>\npublic.<br \/>\nKappa Sigma members cut their hair into<br \/>\nMohawks before the game at Cutz Barber<br \/>\nShop, and encouraged others to do so as<br \/>\nwell. The proceeds from the haircuts went<br \/>\nto help raise money for the first responders.<br \/>\n\u201cThe turnout and the participation, the<br \/>\nsupport of the community was good,\u201d said<br \/>\nHayden Harms, a Kappa Sigma member.<br \/>\n\u201cIf we do it a second year, we\u2019ll make it even<br \/>\nbigger and better.\u201d<br \/>\nA raffle was at half time for prizes such<br \/>\nas gift cards to local restaurants like Yeasty<br \/>\nBeasty and Main Street Ice Cream, as well<br \/>\nas movie tickets to the Independence Cinema.<br \/>\nSpectators who made a basket from the<br \/>\nhalf court line also won prizes.<br \/>\n\u201cI think it was very successful,\u201d Harms<br \/>\nsaid.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kappa Sigma hosted the first annual 1st Responders Charity Basketball game Thursday, Jan. 15, at 8 p.m. in the New PE building.
