{"id":5222,"date":"2017-02-22T08:00:36","date_gmt":"2017-02-22T16:00:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wou.edu\/westernjournal\/?p=5222"},"modified":"2017-02-21T17:16:08","modified_gmt":"2017-02-22T01:16:08","slug":"protesting-in-peace","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernhowl\/protesting-in-peace\/","title":{"rendered":"Protesting in peace"},"content":{"rendered":"<pre>By: Jade Rayner\r\nNews Editor<\/pre>\n<p>On Sunday, Feb. 19, an estimated 1,010 people gathered in front of the Oregon State Capitol building in Salem for the Immigration Rally: part of the Immigrants\u2019 March on all 50 State Capitols protest that took place on President\u2019s Day weekend.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernjournal\/files\/2017\/02\/IMG_1337-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"237\" height=\"158\" class=\"wp-image-5258 alignright\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernhowl\/files\/2017\/02\/IMG_1337-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernhowl\/files\/2017\/02\/IMG_1337-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernhowl\/files\/2017\/02\/IMG_1337-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 237px) 100vw, 237px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>According to the event&#8217;s Facebook page, the purpose of the rally was to empower all citizens, foreign or native, and to stand \u201cin unity and solidarity with all immigrants.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In contrast to the pouring rain and heavy wind that lasted for the duration of the event, both the speakers and attendees alike held their heads and their signs high to spread the message that they, immigrants, weren\u2019t going anywhere.<\/p>\n<p>Western students Gabe Heredia, a senior community health\/education major, and Madelyn Hay, an interdisciplinary studies major were two of the many students attending the rally. When asked what brought them to the event, Hay replied that, \u201cOne of the biggest reasons we wanted to come is Gabe\u2019s family is actually immigrants \u2026 that\u2019s something that kind of struck with us. Like if this had happened 50 years ago, we never would have met \u2026 they were given their chance and we think everyone deserves their chance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Salem resident Taylor Emery was also among the many who stood in protest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m here today because this is something that I passionately believe in, and I wasn\u2019t able to go the Women\u2019 March \u2026 so I\u2019m here to support the immigrants that supported me at the Women\u2019s March,\u201d Emery explained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to try and be involved as I can \u2026 this is just something that I think shouldn\u2019t even be an issue.
