The Delmer Dewey Outstanding Graduating Student award and the Julia McCulloch Smith Outstanding Graduating Student award are prized to two graduating individuals that show excellence in leadership, academics and contributions to Western. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Delmer Dewey Outstanding Graduating Student<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernjournal\/files\/2018\/05\/ISSUE-25-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"527\" height=\"351\" class=\" wp-image-7764 aligncenter\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernhowl\/files\/2018\/05\/ISSUE-25-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernhowl\/files\/2018\/05\/ISSUE-25-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernhowl\/files\/2018\/05\/ISSUE-25-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 527px) 100vw, 527px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Delmer Dewey Outstanding Graduating Student award was presented to Carter Craig. Craig is a senior history major and member of the honors program. During his four years at Western, Craig was a Resident Assistant for one year, president of the Residence Hall Association for two years, a three-time member of the Incidental Fee Committee and chair of the committee in 2017 and a recent Alternative Break team member for the Costa Rica team. Craig notes that one of his favorite involvements on campus was with the Residence Hall Association.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI have really enjoyed intentionally programming for my fellow students and the comradery among the other RHA Exec members,\u201d commented Craig. \u201cI think that same sense of community is also one of Western&#8217;s huge strengths.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In his honors thesis, \u2018\u2018To the Dishonor of God\u2019: Religious Roots for Puritan Morality Laws During the Interregnum,\u2019 Craig investigates the influence of religion on laws during the English Interregnum between 1653 and 1659.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI am grateful to everyone who has supported me,\u201d said Craig.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Julia McCulloch Smith Outstanding Graduating Student<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernjournal\/files\/2018\/05\/ISSUE-25-2-683x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"395\" height=\"592\" class=\" wp-image-7769 aligncenter\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernhowl\/files\/2018\/05\/ISSUE-25-2-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernhowl\/files\/2018\/05\/ISSUE-25-2-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernhowl\/files\/2018\/05\/ISSUE-25-2-768x1152.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 395px) 100vw, 395px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Julia McCulloch Smith Outstanding Graduating Student award was presented to Sara Madden. Madden is a senior social science major and member of the honors program. She is a student athlete who has competed in indoor and outdoor track and cross country for four years while sitting on the Student Athletic Advisory Committee. Madden is the president of Western\u2019s chapter of the Phi Alpha Theta National History Honor Society and a member of the Phi Kappa Phi and Chi Alpha Sigma honor societies. Over all else, Madden has enjoyed being a student athlete at Western.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt has such a family feel to it and has been very rewarding from the time and effort I have put in,\u201d she explained.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Madden\u2019s honors thesis, \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Secret War of WWII: Emmanuel Ringelblum and Jewish Resistance to Nazism in Warsaw 1943<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">,\u201d examines Jewish resistance during the Holocaust.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI feel incredibly honored to receive this award,\u201d Madden expressed. \u201cNever in my wild dreams did I imagine receiving such an honor at this level; it\u2019s truly remarkable.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Contact the author at journalnews@wou.edu<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Photo by: Paul F.
